Parenting Strategies of the Month

This shoe stole her attention for about 25 minutes. I kept thinking…I should stimulate her, teach her something, get involved. But instead I kept sipping my tea and watching. Do you know how much I’d pay for 25 minutes of uninterrupted tea sipping under normal circumstances?

Shortly after this picture was taken, all the remaining toilet paper on the roll was on the floor. And the baby sat in the pile and laughed and laughed. And when she was done, I folded it up and sat it on top of the dispenser. Who cares if it’s a little wrinkled, we wipe our BUTTS with it people. Butts.

In typical Clonk fashion, this baby really, really loves being in the nude. But Japanese apartments aren’t very…let’s just say for such a technologically advanced people, I’m not sure why they haven’t figured out something more effective than space heaters in each room. So it gets chilly. And she resists clothes. So I figure…cover the head and the feet right? RIGHT!?

  1. I often think…”I should probably take that away”…. but then I think… I’m watching her and no one else is around to judge, and she is content! “Play on, sista”! 🙂 the TP is her fave… except Lady H feels the need to tear it in shreds.

  2. We are in full on magazine phase. Give Mick a magazine and he’s content for (upwards of 45 minutes at times!) take it away and it’s like you broke his heart (there are tears!)-until you quickly distract with the silicone baster/brush thing you use to put bbq sauce on chicken. He loves that thing.

  3. That last photo is too awesome for words :).

Wooden spoons and metal pots work great too, just make sure that the sound isolation in your house is good or else you’ll get some pretty upset neighbours. And being yelled at in Japanese just sounds scary too me.

  4. That few moments of peace is the exact reason why we have about 35 unused diapers crumpled in a drawer for Lila’s babies. No she can’t use the diaper she used the morning before it’s “poopy Mom”…she NEEDS a new one.

  5. Thank you for this post! After reading the first paragraph I laughed so hard I cried. Today was just one of those days where I was so tired from a sleepless night with my 8 month old that I just wanted to nap all day, but the baby didn’t. So as I lazed around all day while he played around me, I kept thinking I should be reading to him, or playing with him, or even stimulating him by speaking rather than just silently staring. But I just silently stared because that was all the energy I had. It felt so reassuring to know that I’m not alone. I think my husband thought I was crazy because I couldn’t stop laughing. Thank you for being my “cauliflower” today.

    1. What a great compliment, to be someone’s ‘cauliflower’! 🙂 Don’t beat yourself up, the way I figure it if they were really that bored/understimulated, they wouldn’t be playing so quietly!
