We spent the weekend in Tokyo watching Dave’s final regular season game and soaking up the culture of Japan’s biggest city. The sheer insanity of it all is a lot fun while also being a helpful reminder that no matter how cool it seems to be urban, I am a lakes and woods girl more than a skyscrapers and pavement lady.
In honor of a weekend of being bombarded by giant TV screens on the sides of buildings, advertisements and music videos on the subway and an overall assault of Japanese pop culture, I give you AKB48.
These girls are the ultimate in pre-planned, micro-managed pop sensations and every single they release BLOWS UP in Japan. Their pictures are plastered everywhere (but the members change according to the votes of fans) and when I’m waiting in line at 7-11 I always look at their poster and try to decide which one I’d want to be if the fans voted for me. Answer: whoever happens to be wearing a hat and/or scrunchie in the group photo. I know my role.
